An accident at the underwater park
"Ever17" sets its story in the underwater theme park LeMU. Kurasari Takeshi, who originally came to visit, was trapped in an accident along with the others; Facilities that were usually accessible to tourists have become enclosed spaces where escape is necessary. The areas where you can move, the remaining equipment, and the information your companions possess form the conditions for finding an exit.
The official reissue description summarizes the situation as seven people trapped in a facility beneath the sea. When reading, how the facility operates is just as important as what the characters say: some doubts come from the environment, some from different characters' understanding of the events before them. The work progresses through dialogue and investigation, with a core of suspense set within a closed environment.
Two protagonists and their companions
The game allows the story to unfold from the perspectives of Takeshi Kuranari and the amnesiac boy. Wu Neng recalls the process of entering the park as a visitor, but the boy must first face the blank memory of his own. The information provided from their perspectives differed, and their interactions and understanding of the accident also shifted.
The opening characters include Yuu the park staff, Tsushi who operates within the facility, and Sora, who guides the system. Each of them approaches LeMU differently, with their identities intertwined with information about the facilities. Here, only the initial reveal of the identity is listed; the subsequent explanation and the actual events are placed in the chapter marked with spoilers.
Version relationships
The 2002 original, the 2011 Xbox 360 remake, and the 2025 remake need to be viewed separately. The 2011 edition is a remade product, and its presentation and additional content cannot be directly considered the original specifications.
MAGES. The announced 2025 remaster will be released on March 6 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Steam. This version recreates the work in 2D graphics, while also incorporating additional stories from the 2011 edition and remastering some visual materials. Therefore, when discussing scenes or adding scenes, the version used should be specified. The language support listed on the Steam page also only applies to this PC product.
Underwater accidents and survival limitations
In the spring of 2017, college student Takeshi Kurasari was involved in an accident while visiting the underwater theme park LeMU. The exit to the ground was closed, and dedicated operator Sora Akanegasaki informed that the facility was expected to collapse in 170 hours and 17 minutes. Those trapped must use limited facility knowledge, medical care, and mechanical skills to find escape routes.
Two protagonists and a trapped person
Take Kuranari takes initiative and supports his teammates; Another protagonist, called the boy, lost the memory of his name and origin. Part-time staff member Yu Tanaka is familiar with survival knowledge, and her junior sister Sara Matsunaga visits for a school project; Tsugumi Komachi masters mechanical and medical knowledge, while Koko Yagami accompanies her beloved dog Pipi. Sara's reliance on the boy is the way she interacts with the characters.
The 2025 version of the script and visuals
The Switch, PS4, and Steam remake released on March 6, 2025, uses the 2011 version's expanded and adjusted script, while restoring 2D characters. Tsugumi's new costumes added in 2011 are also presented in 2D, with the opening sequence featuring a remade 2D version of the remake.
The original 2002 edition is a unified version
In a 2017 retrospective, the two authors introduced that Kotaro Uchikoshi drafted the outline for each character arc, wrote the Coco arc, and supervised all routes, while Nakazawa handled the common and excellent youth arcs. Nakazawa also describes the process of Uchikoshi reviewing each author's text before recording, unifying character language and settings.
Dreamcast recording with 2020 soundtrack
Abao Gang explained that the original old soundtrack and related streaming audio sources come from digital recordings of Dreamcast audio. On November 25, 2020, the label released a 24-track digital original sound version with FPBD-0578, re-recorded using the original source and mastered; The 2011 Xbox 360 version also includes a remake and additional BGM.
The theme and creative starting point of the soundtrack
"Lemurianische Ruine" is the theme of both You and LeMU, presenting the prologue worldview. When creating 'Karma', the original concept was inspired by the ending of the Tsugumi arc; In 'Drittes Auge nehmen,' Abogang repeatedly uses the same phrase in seven-meter time.
PSP version: The final chapter after certain routes
The PSP version opens the final chapter of Coco after the happy endings for Tsugumi, Sora, Yu, and Sara. Previously, each ending belonged to the martial and youth perspectives, and after entering the final chapter, the differences between the two perspectives continued.
Early escape concepts and character settings
The more you fight, first confirm the theme park escape, then use underwater restrictions to escape; Tsugumi was once conceived as a vampire girl, but was later changed to a scenario with a virus and a seventeen-year interval.
In 2002, the original work was serialized
Ichikawa recalled during the KID production panel that "Ever17" was originally planned as another standalone titled project. It gradually evolved from the concept of panic and escaping confined spaces, and only during development did it decide to transition to the Infinity series.
