It starts with a romantic relationship

The official PSP version introduces Ken Iha as a third-year student at a private high school and states that he has been dating Hotaru Shirakawa for half a year. The story begins with a relationship that has already been established: Ken believes their happiness will not change, but an incident during the summer break causes cracks in daily life. Misunderstandings and misunderstandings gradually escalate, turning into emotional conflicts in the story.

Main characters and selection pressure

Hotaru Shirakawa is Ken's girlfriend. Other characters include teacher Tsubome Minami, who suddenly moved nearby; Hiseba, a girl Ken met at his job; classmate Takano Sutsuna; and Hotaru's older sister, Shizuru. The occasions where they connect with Ken differ, and their choice of route leads the story toward different relationships. The series producer recalled that the key concept of this work is the "story of dumping a girlfriend": choosing a route other than Hotaru, Ken will break up with Hotaru.

Read and branch

The official genre is romance adventure. The narrative unfolds through text, characters, and scenes, with key choices centered around whom Kento lives with, how to handle misunderstandings, and existing memories. The producer recalled that choosing a route other than Hotaru would change the relationship between Ken and Hotaru; The route structure thus juxtaposes new romantic choices with old memories.

Editions and Signatures

The official PSP product page states that this version was released on May 29, 2008, with character design by Sasaki Mutsumi. The PSP version also includes an AfterStory depicting the subsequent incidents involving Hotaru, Ken, and others. The series review states that Ichikawa and Kotaro Uchikoshi participated in planning discussions, deciding the direction of the work around the concept of "dumping the girlfriend."

Changes in romantic relationships

Ken Iha, a third-year high school student, thinks his life with Hotaru will continue, but a small misunderstanding gradually grows. The story revolves around how to face existing feelings and the people who later approach.

School and work

Hotaru is practicing for a piano competition at the end of August, while her sister Shizuru is concerned about her relationship with Ken; Tomoe was Hotaru's friend from middle school, and met Ken at his job part-time. Takano is active in the same class and swim club, while Nozomi is in the art club and works part-time.

Friends and neighbors

Shota is Ken's close friend with whom he can talk to hearts and was once the captain of the soccer club. Shin and Ken live in the same apartment, and teacher Tsubame moves next door again. Interactions between students and neighbors become different entry points for relationships.

Character singing

Hotaru Yusuki Nana is voiced, and 'From This Distant Sky' is performed under the character's name. Shizuru, Tomoe, Tsubame, Nozomi and Takano, and others also have character songs listed in the series collection; Recording versions and scene scores are organized separately.

Added short stories and high-definition versions

The original was released in September 2001. On May 29, 2008, the PSP version added After Story featuring Kenwa Hotaru and others; Historia Volume 1 was available in HD in 2021. After Rain is another epilogue shared with the first game.

Ba Line: Friends, Soccer, and Performances (Steam main game, spoilers)

After learning that Kenmasa and Hotaru were dating, Tomoe cherished their friendship and refused to pursue further development. Her aversion to football comes from memories of her brother's death, but later faces it again because Ken loves football. The latter part of the GOOD route confronts her with the conflict between her performance and her father's downfall.

Twins and the Hope Ending (Main Chapter, Spoilers)

The Ki and Wang branches reveal that the two sisters alternate working at a restaurant, making it hard for Ken to tell who he fell in love with. Nozomi refuses to continue dragging Xi down and commits suicide at the end: Xi Branch lets Nozomi die, and Nozomi lets Nozomi, who comes to help, die. The hope ending also allows Ken to wake up facing a girl named Sagama Nozomi, and begins to question the twins' memories.

Childhood Misunderstanding in the Swallow Line (Steam main game, spoilers)

Tsubame mistakes the boy who helped her in the past for Ken, but the real boy is actually Shota. Her and Shota's obsession with old memories and her actions to destroy Nagi Manor lead to different outcomes in the latter part; In the GOOD branch, Ken faces Shota's self-destructive actions and stops him from ending his past.

Part-time job, bookstore, and swimming club

In the PSP version of this story, Shin Xiangjian introduces him to a restaurant part-time job, and the two live together at Chaonagi Manor. Takano's bookstore connects her with Shion's friendship; Kana Maikata, a junior in the swimming club, gets close to her during the Takano route.

Hotaru's route reunion (PSP main story, spoilers)

Hotaru won first place in a piano competition and went to study in the City of Music, later returning to the fitness club. She used the marker on the playground to write her confession to Ken, and the music box Ken made for her became an important item on the route.

Shared team and character art expansion

Shibata recalled that the second game, the original Dreamcast version, and "Infinity" were handled by the same team, and the release intervals were not entirely dedicated to the second game's dedicated production period. For the proposed player-submitted script download feature, the team also prepared side profile illustrations and various costume variations that might not be used in this game, making the number of character art more than initially estimated.

Confirm coloring changes

According to Shibata and Matsuo's recollections, the hair and skin tones of the second generation characters were richer than in the first game. Although the design was also provided by Mutsumi Sasaki, the visual impression was noticeably different. Matsuo therefore asked the director to confirm whether to use this color scheme.

PS Audio Source and Tone

When reviewing the original PS work, Abao pointed out that after improving the sound, Firefly produced sounds that exceeded specifications and could not produce sound; Due to insufficient polyphonic notes, "Stream" changed the stereo delay of the Spectagon tone to a single form. He clearly attributed these limitations to the PlayStation version.

"A repeating life (TYPE-II)" adapts the music from the previous work according to the request list. Abao created the sound for the effects and created the sounds, controlling memory usage and handling the sampling loop points with considerable effort.

Also adapted from the previous work, "Nothing (TYPE-II)" uses two sound combinations to try to express the actual feeling of playing folk guitar.

Ending music and included version

The ending track "Memories off 2nd" is first produced using synthesizer music on CD-DA or video, and only switches to built-in audio after completion. Abao then extended the track and incorporated a promotional music box to add a fading music box style; He also prepared sheet music for physical music boxes and listened to the finished product in person.

"Rain then clear" is conceived based on the scene near the end. Abao originally wanted it not to loop, but the actual game still used loop mode, while the version on the soundtrack did not loop.

The melodies and scene scores of the original works

"Reminiscence of raining" was originally a track not officially adopted by "Wings of Dreams" but was included in demos. Abao liked the song and requested it to be repurposed as a retrospective scene music for "2nd."

"Help!" creates tension with bass-range piano and six-meter signatures. Because the song was too emotional, Abao made up the song on the spot with 'Psychological Distortion,' using seven-meter to express agitation.
