Underground Tokyo
Survivors live in the underground stronghold A.T., also known as Augmented Tokyo, using augmented reality to recreate the cityscape. The surface threat has not disappeared; Chloe, tasked with counterattacking, is both a combatant and burdened with the memory of losing someone important. Underground daily life and surface combat create two distinct activity spaces.
Dialogue, exploration, and combat
The game combines dialogue choices, item exploration, mech combat, and musical performances within a VR environment. Players can reach out to operate mech equipment, observe the characters in front of them, or search for clues; Answers in conversations and judgments during combat can alter subsequent developments. Therefore, branches are not only presented through static menus but also connected to the actions within the scene.
Sound and branching
Live performances are presented in VR stage format, with the musical performance connected to the relationships between characters in the story. The game features multiple endings, allowing players to learn about events through different choices; "Episode Yamato" is provided as standalone additional content. The Steam version was released in 2021 and requires VR devices to play.
Kroy and two types of Koko images
Julie created Chloe, and Koko taught her to understand emotions. After Kouko's death, Noa, who looks similar, appears as AARC; The Fallen Star Beast that devoured Koko appeared again in human form like Anima. The connection between appearance and character identity each constitutes the contradiction Chloe faces.
Positions within organizations
Yamato is the driver, while his childhood friend Aoba handles communications; Deiter devised the operations, while Julie took on research and technical responsibilities. Noa serves as both a diva and a mecha support, so the concert and battle form a relationship with the same character.
Bilingual performances and productions
The eight characters have their own English-Japanese dubbing lists, with both Anima voiced by Yui Ishikawa. LAM is responsible for characters, I-IV is responsible for mechanics, and Haruki Kashiakura serves as director; Written by Kyoji Koyama and four others. Yosuke Kori, Kuniyuki Takahashi, and kz participated in the music, with the insert song 'Sunlight' performed by R! Performed by N/Gemie.
Prototypes, scripts, and design adjustments
"Altes: Beyond Time" is based on Haruki Kashiwakura's sci-fi concept proposed to MyDearest, originally intended for animation. The director first produced a makeshift mecha performance in Unity, accompanied by temporary music and scenes for the team to watch; During the script expansion, Yuya Takashima participated in SF research, proposed proposals for the team, and helped establish connections between the previous and subsequent works. The mechanical designs of I-IV were changed from complexity to simplicity due to VR performance limitations; LAM proposed multiple clothing proposals for Chloe, who served as the design foundation, considering black, gray, and colored tights, but ultimately chose a white uniform over the black and white drafts.
Performance and data flow
MyDearest created "Altes: Beyond Time" through member proposals, showcasing results, and then absorbing feedback. Naobaki Tamura also provided interaction and UI suggestions to Koki Nakachi. UI appearance and disappearance are represented by zoom animations, with some translucent effects simulated by intermittent light animations; Lip-Sync uses Python to batch process 9,222 voice files for each language, generates CSV from wav, extracts vowels from pre-written scripts, and applies them to Unity animations. The team adopted ADX2 uniformly from development to reduce cross-platform redundant adjustments.
Commissioning and coordinating scene scores
Yosuke Gun, who worked in "ALTDEUS," first commissioned Kuniyuki Takahashi to compose ten pieces of music focusing on the main scenes and character drama. After reading the script, Takahashi didn't know Jun was also composing BGM, so he proactively added two universal ambient tracks, ultimately delivering twelve tracks.
Jun arranged the adventure scene music according to the background and dialogue timing, adjusted track balance and playback methods, and especially focused on the musical transitions in the briefing scene. Each ending also prepares a theme song based on the final mood.
