A new world line event

In the summer of 2010, after a series of events, Okabe arrives at a world where he thought he could live peacefully. The sudden dizziness made him realize the world line had shifted again, and then his phone received a D-mail from his fifteen-year self. Future Okabe points out that the old computer IBN5100 fell into others' hands, causing absurd changes in global industries, ultimately leading to the global economic crisis of 2025. Now, Okabe must reclaim the computer and find a way to return to the original timeline.

Enter the command to advance the investigation

Players need to enter English words themselves as action commands, choosing how to investigate, move, or take actions on characters. The game makes finding the right commands part of the story progression, and its gameplay differs from the main series, where you read through predetermined choices.

Vintage visuals and audio sources

The image simulates the process of drawing outlines and coloring line by line, and allows you to skip drawing immediately. The default mode uses digital eight-color and FM sound sources, and it can also switch between analog modes for different old-school computer specifications. The official website uses fictitious model names such as MEC PC8081; When the picture mode changes, the music corresponds to different audio source specifications.

Music and production

Chiyomaru Shikura was in charge of planning, Tatsuya Matsubara served as producer, and the Banma Ban was produced. For the brand producer, Hayashi Nao-taka wrote the script, and Abao Gang was responsible for the music. The first edition comes with three versions of the original soundtrack, featuring tracks such as "Gate of Steiner," "Laboratory," and "OPERATION SKULD." The 53 tracks contain multiple interpretations of the same track, not 53 unrelated new tracks.

Release specifications

The original version was released on CD-ROM, targeting the Windows XP, Vista, and 7 environments of the time; The game has no character voice acting, nor separate CG, music, or video appreciation modes. The first press bonus later removed the originally announced booklet, retaining the retro packaging and the original soundtrack. The 2011 release of this game should be separately documented from other retro bonuses related to Steins;Gate Elite.

The FC plan was not adopted

When M2 was developing Octet, there was an FC version plan and resources planned for a cleared game, but it was not adopted. In a 2018 interview, Naoki Horii recalled having suggested to Shikura that he reuse his voice resources and asked if he wanted to promote new special editions; Matsubara only said it was possible.

A retro soundtrack written with MML

Abao recalled in 2016 that the music for the PC version of "Eight Bits of Variable Space" was entirely written in MML, with source code included at the time.
