A stranger in Snow Town
Sayoko lives alone in a small town apartment isolated by heavy snow, rarely going out. The residents here call themselves "ghosts": they seem never to age or decay, yet their lives come to a halt due to oblivion and monotony. Sayoko is the only outsider in town who doesn't belong to the ghosts; When a friend tells her a new ghost has arrived in town, she knows this conflicts with the town's rules of never coming and going. The story begins with reunions and casual conversation, gradually shifting to questions about ghosts, memories, and the world beyond town.
Sayoko, Yoru, and their companions
Yor is the first ghost to come here from outside town, with no place of his own, temporarily sharing a place with Sayoko; She is sociable and also works as a consultant in town. Sayoko is forgetful and slow-witted, often feeling anxious about her situation; She reunites with friends she hasn't contacted for a long time, and Yoru's arrival makes her see town life in a new light. Anya, who works at the repair shop, speaks bluntly and is skilled in machinery; Pacifica often solves local troubles as a detective or teacher. The character relationships carry a humorous sense of everyday life, gradually revealing the unease behind the town's order.
Image storytelling and world rules
This work adopts the approach of an "electronic graphic novel": the story is mainly continuous reading with no branching options. Picture book-style hand-drawn images overlay faults, noise, and intense image transitions create a nostalgic yet unstable visual experience; Players follow Sayoko as they explore the town, lost memories, and the origins of Yoru. The ghost's forgetfulness, the snowy plains outside town, and the rules of life inside together form a suspenseful thread.
Chapters and Published Versions
"Ghostpia Season One" features the story from the first season of the series and is available on Nintendo Switch and Steam; The Steam version was released on August 22, 2023, developed under the name Super Waterway, and published under the names room6 and yokaze. The work follows a fixed path of dynamic visual novels, and the official Super Waterway website also retains the epilogues, character introductions, and world information.
The town church and police
The priest-led church influences the town's affairs and police. Clara is a priest, but Sayoko and her friends are uncomfortable with it. Although the inspector spoke casually, he still handled his work seriously; The ordinary officers under his command lacked experience dealing with violence.
Neighbors, shops, and assistants
Patel's café is a safe spot Sayoko and her friends often visit, Anya works at a repair shop, and Rou looks after people at the Cosplay store. Wealthy Legna lives on an entire floor of the same apartment building as Sayoko, and Miet is her loyal and knowledgeable assistant.
Resurrection, Forgetting, and Garbage Hill
After death, ghosts may reappear in garbage piles within minutes to a day, and their original bodies may remain. Items that are no longer noticed may also disappear and return to trash; forgetting and recycling together form the town's cycle; The townspeople have no complete historical records.
Outside the town where investigation is prohibited
The 1,025 former residents usually live alone, and Yoru becoming Sayoko's roommate is a change in their lives. There are embedded unexploded missiles in the square, and few people come to the abandoned station. The church forbade investigating the snowfields surrounding the town, and the residents' statements could not prove that there was truly nothing outside the town.
Production and Music
Written by Hitsuhito Mita, art design by Suzume Yoban Yamamoto, main programming by hako Life, and visual engineering by Ozumikan. Hiromu Takano produced the music, Meno provided vocals, and Hachi Hachi Ken was responsible for production; Produced by Chosuido, labeled by Yokaze, and distributed by room6.
A collection of twenty-six tracks of original sound and drafts
Relay was released on June 27, 2024, with 26 tracks featuring Ghost, Ninja, and the ending credits of each episode, City, Friend, and Two with Meno participating. Sales of the old Terminus and its high-resolution DVDs stopped with the launch of Relay. The official team also has a 60-page PDF artbook and a Draftpia draft booklet, which record the production process and are not necessarily the complete storyline.
Production of the performance engine
hako Life Productions Novelarium engine and specialized tools, combined with close communication with Chosuidō, to achieve the first season performance.
Challenges in implementing synchronous playback
Synchronized replay was submitted by Mita to Hako; When implementing, it is necessary to record the player's reading time to maintain the connection between the scene and the text.
Rewriting old drafts in the process of remake
The first season remade with a remade engine, adding new stories, while rewriting old scripts and drawing new illustrations; The team recalled that this process took about five years.
Collaboration between manuscripts and composition
Mita and Yamamoto discuss composition through paper drafts or PDF red-pen annotations, first submitting the minimum plot steps, then advancing the text and art in parallel.
Dynamic visuals and click feedback
The Switch remake uses gyroscope visuals to soften staticism, HD vibration for text advancement for click feedback, and intensity is repeatedly adjusted.
Programmed text sound
Yamamoto created a prototype of the six-syllable character sound, mapping hiragana to vowels and other characters to ん; the Switch version uses this method.
Resource arrangement for single-line routes
The team focused resources saved from QTEs and branches on refining a script.
The character's expressions and the formation of the snowy plain art style
In an interview with the first season, Yamamoto recalled that Sayoko repeatedly revised her expressions to maintain the impression of lacking confidence; The concept images were tested using Painter, identifying the deep blue sky and snowy plains with pastel winds. Use fewer straight line tools for the background, preserving the distortion of hand-drawn lines. Yoru's sailor suit design responds to Mita's request for a mermaid image.
In 2019, OP development and remake support was provided
In the 2019 OP development log for the Switch version, Yamamoto set the duration with dynamic drafts, Madara handled coloring, and Yamamoto cleared lines in parallel. By the first season 2023 production review, the team also mentioned that they had received additional art staff through room6 consultation.
