Members and early activities

eufonius is composed of riya and Hajime Kikuchi; the former handles vocals, while the latter handles music production. The group participated in the opening theme "Megmel" for the PC game "CLANNAD," and later made their commercial debut in October 2004 with the theme for the opening and ending themes of the TV anime "Futakoi."

Label and independent release

Early record activities included both label releases and self-produced albums. TEAM Entertainment's history brief lists "Ao no Scape" and "Nejima Kimujika" as examples of two different release formats.

Division of labor in independent production

In a 2016 production interview, Kikuchi said he first sent two or three sample songs to riya for lyrics, along with brief world-building tips; Riya rewrites based on her own listening experience. After the lyrics were completed, the two arranged time to record in the studio.

Commissioned theme songs and free structure

In 2014, eufonius explained that anime theme songs need to consider the segments, sound thickness, and climax of the TV broadcast duration. Self-released works have greater structural freedom and can experiment with different developments from common verses, transitions, and choruses.

The coordination of vocals and collaborative performance

Eufonius's production considered riya's vocal range alongside the performances of his collaborators. When arranging, Hajime Kikuchi anticipated mixing and preserved the clarity of the lead vocalist through instrumental arrangements; During recording, adjustments are made based on actual performance, with emphasis on the musicians' individuality.

Focused production inspired by 'Sorafulhate'

eufonius focused on producing the 2016 "Solar Full Hate," which Hajime Kikuchi recalls, with the finished product completed by the end of April that year; Riya recalled that the lyric writing was very intensive, and the recording and singing proceeded consecutively.

Collaboration with Sense of and sound production

The 2021 collaboration on "Sense of" began in discussions between Hibiki Ichinose and riya. Ichinose first wrote "Solfège Lesson," then Hajime Kikuchi followed up with "Regression" based on sample songs; Kikuchi also provided a recording studio, participating in recording guidance and mixing.

While making "Regression," Kikuchi improvised recording toy music boxes and instruments from the recording room, preserving the sound of accidentally knocking over the microphone stand. He first created accompaniment with sound effects, then layered synthesizers and biaural recording of riya. The recording also attempted to walk from right to left and produce sounds.

The re-edited version of 'Chiisana Uta' uses vocal tracks from over ten years ago. Originally planned to add a soprano saxophone, the three switched to it after hearing the musician's tarogato; Kikuchi recorded the wind instruments and handed the files to Ichinose for mixing.

Kikuchi rearranged the 2018 version of 'Hanten Colorful' and invited Ichinose to record the piano. Ichinose repeatedly listens to the track split and familiarizes himself with the progression, making the new piano part harmonize with the chords of the existing track.

"Doomsday Cord" features two vocal melodies intertwining. Ichinose first used a portable tape recorder to record a studio piano as a sample, but later felt the earliest version was more suitable and ultimately kept it.

During mastering, Kikuchi first unified the mixed 48 and 96 kHz footage to 96 kHz, then captured it as a DSD by analog equipment. In the final stage, he used the AVALON DESIGN AD2055 and even replaced the EQ knob with a REQST product.
