June in Hinamizawa

Keiichi Maehara, who moved from the city, met Reina Ryugu, Mion Sonozaki, Satoko Hojo, and Rika Furude at the village school, and joined them in a "club activity" game. The seemingly peaceful village experiences strange incidents every June, with one person dying and one person disappearing. These events are linked to past dam construction disputes, village history, and legends of the shrine deity.

The composition of ten stories

This edition uses seven original stories from "Onikaku-hen" to "Jiekotsu-hen," along with newly written "Kan Hui Hen," "Pingluo Hen," and "Mio Jin Hen." The choices in the shared route in the first half lead readers to various events, with 'Miojin Arc' serving as the final chapter of the PS2 version. The original 'Sacriba Chapter' is not included as the final chapter in this edition; the two unfold differently.

The entrance to the 'Washing Back' chapter

Police officer Oishi Kuranoto comes to investigate a murder near the Watanagari Festival, but Keiichi finds his friend unwilling to cooperate and refuses to let him ask for details. After Shion mentions past incidents in the village, Mion and Reina's attitudes and police questioning terrify Keiichi, who eventually turns to Rika for help. Screenwriter Kisako Miyagi said this story preserves many hidden clues, making it difficult to deduce the truth of the entire work by relying solely on it.

Different identities in the village

Miyin hosts club activities, while her twin sister Shion lives in the neighboring town of Xinggong and works part-time at a restaurant. Oishi tries to uncover the mysterious death before retiring; Photographer Jiro Tomitake regularly comes from Tokyo to the village to shoot wild birds; Kyosuke Irie was in charge of the clinic, while nurse Mitsuyo Takano studied the village's history alone. Campuses, police, and medical institutions approach the same incident from different perspectives.

Visuals, voice acting, and music

Rato redesigned the characters for the PS2 version, and the event illustrations were redrawn. The main voice actors include Soichiro Hoshi as Keiichi, Mai Nakahara as Rena, and Satsuki Yukino as Mion and Shion, with other characters also voiced independently. The music was composed by 5zizz, a collaboration between 5pb. and ZIZZ STUDIO, with producers including Chiyomaru Shikura and Toshimichi Isoe.

Adapted from the original work and console

Three newly added scripts were produced under the supervision of the original author, Dragon Knight 07. The PS2 version adds options not present in the original, connecting previously split stories into branchable adventure structures. The 2007 follow-up "Fragment Game" further expanded voice acting and additional content, serving as an improved version of this console version.

PS2 Music and Subsequent Highlights

The PS2 festival opening theme is performed by Ayane Hankinomori, with lyrics and composition by Chiyomaru Shikura, and arrangement by Toshimichi Isoe. The opening theme of the Mio Jin-hen Complex & Image is also performed by Ayane, with lyrics and music by Shikura, and arranged by Koji Ueno. Both tracks were included in the Analogy Best Selection on July 28, 2021, featuring an unplugged recording arranged by @2.
