The concentrated arrival of book cover commissions

In a 2011 interview, Shinsaku Fujita recalled that the first Stephen King cover he painted was the 1989 album "Pet Cematary." After entering the 1990s, over about a month, commissions for "Misery," "Poodle Springs Story," and "Muscle Girl" tape packages came in, forming a period of his work experience entering the 1990s.

Rethinking picture books from the editor's perspective

Fujita originally had no interest in picture books, but after seeing Chris Van Allsburg's works, he became interested in trying them. An editorial comment criticized the artist for thinking too early through images, which led to him temporarily stopping his ideas; Later, picture books were understood as a medium for readers to imagine using already presented images, redistinguishing them from listening to stories or imagining scenes through words.

Using water and light and shadow to convey the characters' psychology

When creating the picture book "Chiisana-machi," Fujita drew a mirror-like steady reflection, then let the water surface ripple with the wind and the scenery gradually darken, hoping readers could imagine the girl's psychology through the changing scenes. He also chooses an ending where the uneasy girl finally returns to the warmth of her family.
