Small bars and big cities
Glitch City is controlled by large corporations and law enforcement forces, with technology deeply embedded in everyday life. The story focuses on conversations in bars: people from different professions and backgrounds come to the counter, and the pressures and personal troubles of the city are revealed through their experiences.
Branches produced by bartending
Players prepare drinks for customers according to the ingredients and preparation steps. The choice of story is expressed through what kind of wine to serve, paying attention to the order and understanding the guest's state; The result of the bartending affects the conversation and subsequent plot.
Visuals and sound
The visuals incorporate the style of Japanese PC-98 era adventure games, with pixel images shaping counters, characters, and neighborhoods. Michael Kelly composed the score under the name Garoad, with music and the bar setting forming the reading rhythm.
Development process
The game initially participated in Cyberpunk Jam in 2014, then evolved into a full game, released on June 21, 2016. Christopher Ortiz was responsible for overall direction and art, Fernando Damas handled game design, writing, and programming, and Garoad participated in music production.
Series extension
"N1RV Ann-A" continues the concept of bartending and observing society, instead setting itself on Saint Alicia Island and another group of protagonists. Its release status, roles, and ingredient design are separately recorded.
Character design in anonymous proposals
Streaming-chan comes from an anonymous selected proposal, with an appearance developed from Ortiz's energetic image.
Choose an apartment style for comfort
The Japanese-style atmosphere of Jill apartments comes from Ortiz's choice of comfort.
Preparation and processing of bartending branches
Fernando explained that in 2016, after delivering the drink, the VA-11 HALL-A checked the date, customer and drink conditions, separately handled the sweetness and alcohol combination, and saved the answer label for subsequent branch calls. Karmotrine usage accumulates with each passenger, resets after switching to zero, and then checks the conditions for drunken dialogue during the scene.
Character appearance and dialogue style
Ortiz chose his hairstyle based on his understanding of Jill's acceptance of childishness and homebody charm. Fernando, in "VA-11 HALL-A," lets sexual topics naturally arise, avoiding deliberately piling strong words; He draws on his experience in bars and gatherings to balance everyday topics with sexual topics.
2016 PC Instructions: Fill in raw materials and alcohol tests
When the formula labels Karmotrine as optional, you can skip it to make a non-alcoholic beverage or add it to adjust the alcohol level. The developer used a customer on the first day as an example: at a specific dialogue checkpoint, if the accumulated Karmotrine value exceeds 18, it will enter drunken dialogue.
2019 Console Edition: Bartending and Jill's Life
Before the release of the PS4 and Switch versions in 2019, PLAYISM introduced that players use joysticks and buttons to prepare drinks, and mixing them triggers vibration; The Switch also supports shake controls. Formulation errors can be redone multiple times.
Too many bartending mistakes would lower Jill's salary, and she had to save money to pay rent and electricity. The PLAYISM product description further points out that continuously offering drinks that differ significantly from orders may lead to layoffs or inability to cover these expenses.
Outside of work, Jill can browse forums at home and chat with the cat Foa; The boss would visit to drink beer together, and companions would gather to play games.
