"Forget me not -Palette-" is a PlayStation memory exploration adventure released in 2001, adapted from "Palette," created by Yoshitaka Nishida using RPG Maker 95. Nighttime calls
A doctor in Xi'an was asked by a woman armed at night to answer a phone call. On the other end of the phone, B.D couldn't explain his past; the lingering impression was related to red. The doctor guided her through conversation, then shifted her perspective into her memory.
Memory room
The memory space uses a top-down view, with different rooms connected by lines. Initially vague white objects or character outlines require investigation to gradually restore meaning. Finding clues leads to new connections, and scenes seen before can change our understanding based on information gained later.
Mental state and return
Moving in memory consumes the mental gauge, which is interrupted after depletion, allowing players to return to the doctor and B.D. communication. Exploration is not just about walking through the room continuously; it also involves deciding which clues to encounter in a single recollection. In the PS version, save files and other organization operations are placed in the doctor's office and can view the acquired memory fragments.
From the free original to the PS version
The original work "Palette" was produced by Yoshitaka Nishida and won the Grand Prize at the 4th ASCII Software Competition. The PS version, released on April 26, 2001, was developed by SUCCESS and published by Enterbrain, supplementing visuals, opening visuals, and some character voice lines, while retaining the core structure of memory relationships.
Character voice acting
The end credits list B.D. voiced by Rie Kanda, Xi'an Doctor by Kunihiko Yasui, Black Hat Bekta by Muneya Juryo, and the Red-Highlighted Woman by Yuriko Yamaguchi. The way characters appear in memory and how they are addressed also form clues themselves.
Staff
Shuhiro Onuki and Kuninari Sakai directed the film, with Tomohiro Nakama handling the production. The sound director was Tetsuro Sato, Yuki Yoshino was responsible for the music and sound effects, and Shinsaku Fujita created the packaging art. The original credits and port production teams are listed separately, reflecting the division of development from individual works to console versions.
