Draft and color sequence on paper
In the 2016 original illustration production instructions for the U35, the draft was first sketched with pen and paper, then scanned into a computer; Before sketching, she planned the colors and decided which parts to use first, depending on whether the main focus was on the person or the environment.
Color coordination between the figure and the background
In the same original illustration production in 2016, U35 used flat paint to process the character and thick paint for the background, simultaneously correcting the skin tone and clothing color as the background progressed, and finally using Photoshop to adjust the tone and effects, so that both drawing techniques could be combined into a single image.
Silhouettes, line art, and color layering
In a September 2021 interview, U35 explained that after the draft is complete, it first fills the character silhouette with temporary colors to check the balance between the character and the blank space in the frame. When cleaning the draft, split the layers by component to make it easier to trim overlapping or boundary areas without affecting adjacent lines, while preserving the initial stroke force.
When drawing the eyes, the U35 avoids overemphasizing the whites: mainly paint the upper side white and blend it into the surrounding areas, without deliberately creating a clear border on the lower side. Lash liner also adds a color close to the skin, while the pupils are layered less and colors are mixed as they draw to achieve transparency in deeper colors.
U35 explains that he overlays multiple colors on the layers of some illustrations and lowers the opacity, allowing simple smearing, stretching, and shavings to produce more subtle color variations. U35 did not apply this method to all images; even the same person would try slightly different layered colors.
