Convenience store with cramped rooms
After graduating from high school, Tan Yan left his hometown, rented a cramped apartment on Pinghua Island, and made a living working at a convenience store. He is estranged from his parents, has no friends or lovers, and repeats similar tasks every day. The "box" mentioned in the work primarily corresponds to this unchangeable daily routine: living space, workplace, and the barriers between him and others all restrict his life.
Axue's invitation
Tan Yan happened to meet a young girl named Axue. She claims that aliens have taken control of Pinghua Island through mind control, her base has been destroyed, and many companions have lost their lives as a result. She hopes to rescue the people on the island and invites Tan Yan to participate. The girl's words conflict with the protagonist's familiar daily life, forcing him to reassess the world before him and the actions he can take.
A single-line story and interpretive space
The game has no story options or different endings; players read in a predetermined order. The development team's so-called open experience means that the same text can be interpreted differently, rather than hiding multiple routes to explore. The author hopes the plot is dramatic, while the twists are based on the characters' situations and the causality of events, centering on being trapped in life and the impulse to break free.
From fan projects to mobile versions
The production team explained that the idea began during a trip when several classmates wanted to collaborate on a game, and later recruited members at the school. Initially, it was intended just for clubs and friends within the group, but later it expanded to Steam and mobile platforms. The official Steam version was released on July 23, 2020; The Traveler Project participates in the mobile release, with the 2024 mobile version introducing the Yukie and Island background.
Script and sound
Street Park was responsible for the script, Han Xun produced the music, woctordho handled the performance, Zhouhy and Xiaoxiao Tongxue handled the programming, and Wang Runnan served as the organizer. The opening theme was produced by Dongshao, performed by Qi Inory. The separately released original soundtrack retains the music for scenes such as convenience store work, island street scenes, and character encounters, continuing the atmosphere of everyday life and suspense.
Cohabitation, disagreement, and shipbuilding and going global
Tan Yan accepts A Xue entering his life, but does not believe her explanation of the world. Disagreements during cohabitation led to Axue's departure; After discovering the island's anomaly, he reunites with her to build a ship, attempting to escape from Pinghua Island. A Xue's claim to save humanity and Tan Yan's desire to break free from their original lives drive this operation.
Lexuan's investigation and snowball
Le Xuan was originally Tan Yan's colleague at the convenience store, investigating to uncover the truth behind her brother's mental illness. After a setback at sea, Tan Yan met her at the TV station's underground secret base, where she had already learned about the Snowball Project from the black box. The two argued over whether the plan should be maintained; Tan Yan ultimately destroyed the black box, and the original order on Pinghua Island collapsed. The story does not continue to determine where society will go after change.
Chapter 14: Time and Perspective
The first seven chapters span more than half a month, while the last seven chapters only take two days. The encounters and shipbuilding are skipped for now and then covered in subsequent flashbacks. The story mainly uses Tan Yan's first-person perspective; he, A Xue, Le Xuan, and the black box each possess different information. In 2020, the main PC series had fourteen chapters. The originally planned chapter fifteen was deleted, and the ending of Mr. Zhou and Tan Yan's farewell to Axue were not included.
A ship that cannot sail out of the island
Tan Yan found A Xue, who had left his residence, in the forest and expressed his willingness to uncover the truth together. The two prepared to escape by ship from Pinghua Island, only to find that all routes only shuttled between ports within the island, with no ships heading out of the island. After the boat trip was blocked, Tan Yan shifted his investigation focus to the TV station.
Xiao Ke's actor and Lexuan's younger brother
"Little Ke" has a young girl wearing sunglasses take viewers on a tour of the island's scenery. Xiao Ke has always been young, but the actors have changed more than ten times. Le Xuan's brother is infatuated with one of the actors and has never accepted a replacement even after she retires; After learning that the original actor had committed suicide, he ran away from home and was found again in a vegetative state. To find out the reason, Le Xuan joined the TV station and became one of the actors playing Xiao Ke.
The knowledge limitations of the black box
The black box claims to be the terminal of the Snowball System, indicating that after the war, humans used electromagnetic shielding to protect the remaining habitats. To prevent residents from redeveloping communication technology and breaking through barriers, it limits people's knowledge and influences their thinking through television. Le Xuan accepted its protective explanation, but Axue believed the system itself was an alien force controlling humans. Tan Yan ultimately chooses to destroy the black box, and the conflict between the two interpretations remains in the open ending.
