A love story for the bystander

Yuan Jiyao attended Terry Qingzhi University and lived long under the influence of his roommate Hua Ang. Facing Shen Yan, he felt he had no chance to compete, yet he couldn't suppress his desire to get close to her. Participating in this relationship means stepping out of a bystander position and possibly accepting failure.

Between people

Shen Yan is the object of mutual affection between Yuan Jiyao and Hua Ang, seemingly familiar with Yuan Jiyao's past; Mu Zhuying, Zhao Shi, and Yang Yuxiao also entered his life. Supporting characters like Qiao Qianmei, head of the news department, participate in the incident, making the relationships in the story go beyond the initial love triangle.

Choose from thirteen endings

The work has thirteen endings. The branch centers on the characters' actions in the face of setbacks, constantly questioning whether Yuan Jiyao's feelings are about understanding and longing for others, or an obsession with something unattainable. Different outcomes are not all aimed at successful relationships.

Production and distribution

Lan Lian'an was responsible for the original story, script, and production, with voice actors including Yueye Bridge, Shen Nianru, and Ye Zhiqiu. The Steam version was released in July 2020, offering Chinese voice acting and a standalone soundtrack collection. The production team allowed live sharing, but the public rules required selecting a single ending and not uploading the full process.

A love triangle on campus

The story takes place at TerraTree Qingzhi University. Yuan Jiyao and his roommate Hua Ang liked the same person, Shen Yan: Hua Ang excelled in every way, but Yuan Jiyao was used to placing himself on the margins of others' stories. The same dorm room and the same crush made it hard for him to continue seeing himself as a bystander.

Original soundtrack production

The original soundtrack was produced by the 8A studio production team, with Azhai as supervisor, Lan Lian'an as producer, and seventh notes composed. The 22 tracks retain different versions for piano, cello, violin, music videos, and more, and are included separately as separate recordings.

Original soundtrack included

Released on August 5, 2020, this 22-track soundtrack includes the game's soundtrack, including piano, cello, violin, and a PV version; WAV audio is provided separately.

The student council and old ties

At the beginning, Yuan Jiyao claims that his twin brother died in a childhood car accident, and this self-awareness influences his self-evaluation. Hua Ang wanted to get close to Shen Yan by getting him into the student council; Qiao Qianmei was originally his online friend, and after meeting again on campus, she shared with him about the dilemma of unrequited love. Yang Yuxiao and Chen Weiran apply for membership together. Chen Weiran prepares her homework but discovers they choose different departments, and their subsequent experiences are interwoven with the branches of the three female leads.

The idol's work and assistant

Mokutake Sakura is Hua Ang's cousin and also a member of Strawberry Puff. She served as a judge for the campus singer competition, and Yuan Jiyao became her assistant for filming the vlog. Support from their interactions, rumored photos, and opportunities to switch to a new record label led to her personal journey; "Stargazer" made Yuan Jiyao firmly support her, while "The Postman" changed the outcome after a similar experience by long-standing loneliness and inferiority.

Zhao Shi's confession and departure

Zhao Shi liked Yuan Jiyao, and in some branches, the two began dating, but he still had feelings for Shen Yan. Hua Ang and Shen Yan's romance and the reappearance of old flames make the relationships among the four even more complicated. In "The Long Farewell," Zhao Shi stopped flattering enthusiastically and ultimately chose to leave calmly, leaving Yuan Jiyao feeling lost and guilty.

From the human world to the full game

In his early years, Lan Lian'an drew his own character illustrations to produce the Orange Light demo 'Another World,' and later adapted the script into a novel for public release. In 2019, after reading the novel, Otaku contacted her to promote the production of a complete Galgame. During the dubbing budget calculation, Lan Lian'an once reduced all in-game voice and text; Later, voice actors offered a friendship price, but the completed compression still affected the way the dialogue was written.

Interaction and honesty in the Book of Sand

"The Book of Sand" allows the protagonist to date Shen Yan, and through their interactions, he gradually learns about her daily life. After dating for several months, both sides opened up to each other; Confronted with the truth about his own past, the protagonist transforms from a distant ideal to someone to live with him.

A turning point in their relationship after traveling to Guya Island

Zhao Shi's related branch arranged for four people to travel to Lonai Island together: the protagonist and Zhao Shi were a couple, Hua Ang and Shen Yan were the other pair. After the trip, Hua Ang reconnects with his old lover, and Shen Yan kisses the protagonist, who is still dating Zhao Shi, at a bar; Zhao Shi later ended their relationship with a text message, and the four changed their unrequited love and old feelings to each other.

From entering the lake to living together

The "Heart" of the Kikuzakura line first describes the two embracing and walking into the lake on a rainy night, then deciding to live together. After living together, the two still fell into financial difficulties; The ending again shifts to joint death, converging on the gas incident.
