Another group of residents at the school
Classrooms, staircases, mirrors, and the health office in the school are also places where yokai can operate. The encounter between the monster known as the "Seven Wonders" and the student often makes everyday wounds, desires, and fears visible. The second night continues to revolve around school bullying, but also includes gatherings and daily life among monsters, presenting a different narrative pace from the first night.
Arrangement of seven stories
The first part, "Moon Appreciation Party," begins with Marie attending a gathering of monsters; "The Monster of the Thirteen Steps" revolves around Aya Soma and the staircase ghost story. "Welcome to the World of Mirrors" features familiar characters appearing in opposite ways, "Portraits of Boys" begins with an encounter in the art studio, and "My Best Friend" explores Michiru's feelings after losing a friend. The last two parts, "Thistle of Revenge" and "Before the Red Spider Lily Blooms," return to the reasons behind bullying and monster actions.
The self in the mirror
In the third part, the mirror guard Kyo asks Marie to help clean the mirror in the mirror world. The character's personality in the mirror is opposite to reality; the familiar way of interacting fails, and Marieda faces the behavior of another self. This chapter uses comedic dislocations to discuss inferiority, dominance, and how to understand oneself.
The boundary between help and revenge
"Thistle of Revenge" begins with Yukari Sakaki protecting the bullied Yoshikawa. Yoshikawa's denial of his situation and his desire for revenge gave the monsters a chance to intervene; The shifting positions of victim and perpetrator also mean that initial help may not end the harm. The story focuses on how class relationships repeatedly create new goals.
The old story of the red spider lily
The final chapter traces back to the period when monsters were still fighting over the school territory. Higanbana meets the boy Shuuichi Mori, who expresses emotions through painting, and begins to encounter feelings unfamiliar to her. It provides background for the way the red spider lily interacts with humans, echoing the yokai life before Marie's eyes.
