The project for 'New Sakura Wars'
According to series director Takaharu Terada, in the first week or two of "New Sakura Wars," Ishii's plot outline helped the revival project pass meetings; This story was later discarded. The project was reimagined until around November 2016, when the World Chinese Strike Corps Battle Plan was formed.
3D production of "New Sakura Wars."
The mobile suit design in "New Sakura Wars" was first converted to 3D by the team, then submitted to the designers for review and revision. The character profile is guided by a design diagram that unifies the head, body, color, and expression examples; When Sakura's multiple prototypes still showed weakness, the team paused work on other characters, first focusing on Sakura's adjustments, then adjusting Kamiyama and other characters based on her performance, and continuing to refine based on actual performances.
After introducing motion capture, the old proportions made it difficult for the body to perform waist movements when swinging the sword, so the head and body were raised and a skeleton closer to the human body was adopted. Initially, the plan to see the cockpit figures from the outside was abandoned due to the burden of polygons and body coordination difficulties, and the project shifted focus to ensuring movement and control.
Character design feedback for 'New Sakura Wars'
Recalling the collaboration on "New Sakura Wars," Tite Kubo said that larger proposals await internal discussions at SEGA, while details like shoe shapes are confirmed via LINE. Clarice's body proportions and glasses scheme were adjusted through feedback; Shigeshige Kubo had drawn young Tetsukan, and the cane in Sumire's sketch was changed into a fan during development.
Trial gameplay and branch adjustments for 'New Sakura Wars'
To showcase stage mechanisms and enemy appearances, the production team selected the battle in episode 4 as a demo segment for "New Sakura Wars." But this section goes beyond the basics, making it harder for players to get started; TGS2019 version is therefore easier to tune than the Hanayashiki trial version. The production team also adjusted Kamiyama's overly strong comedic performance to avoid damaging his gentlemanly image. Character branches are controlled for expansion, with the goal of allowing players to comfortably experience the full content and reducing the burden of repeated playthroughs.
The visual and costume movements of "New Sakura Wars."
The team studied cartoon rendering performance and considered adaptation with the development engine, trying to adjust the visual design of "New Sakura Wars" between illustration and realistic polygons. After the model was revealed, details were still lacking, so developers continued to patch up patterns and enhance the texture of the kimono. Sakura's long hair and hakama bring a high load of physical activity; The hakama is made by connecting the entire model with multiple joints inserted to allow it to bend.
Detailed enemy aircraft and mobile suit settings
In "New Sakura Wars," regular enemy aircraft need to appear in large numbers, so the team tries to minimize their stats; Large puppet mechs are based on demonic appearances, with enhanced mechanical parts and materials to emphasize presence. Anastasia's parachute weapon was expanded from Meiki's concept through staff discussion; Clarice's book weapon was sketched during the meeting and adopted after receiving positive feedback. The Mugen inner eye plan initially made Akiki hesitate, but Terada valued its use for expressing eyes and expressions, prompting him to reconsider facial details.
