and then parted ways with the sea serpent
Fang Bie's codename is Sea Serpent. He must earn the enemy's trust while concealing his own contacts. After Chapter 3, he loses the materials to prove his identity and contact with the organization, and his original mission shifts to an unverifiable covert mission. His subsequent choices revolve around this dilemma.
Figures in the intelligence network
Mr. Liu is Fang Bie's superior but hopes his son will replace Sea Snake. Yuji Okayama belonged to the Japanese camp; Number Two appears in Chapter 4, involving a broader intelligence campaign. Each character has their own objectives, and players cannot judge their actions based solely on their public identity.
Choices and endings
The game mainly progresses through text and choices; incorrect choices can cause the action to fail immediately; The longer branches change the final destination of the characters. It uses fictional characters to handle historical themes, with secret deals and endings within the story setting.
Serialized production
The work began with the Orange Light internship project in the summer of 2013, with the first two chapters released in August. The author continued writing due to continuous player feedback, releasing the sixth chapter in December 2014, totaling about 180,000 words. The script expanded from a short survival game to a serialized chapter.
Revising and adapting
After the original was removed in 2015, the author released a prologue to 'Chitu: Sunshine Edition,' switching to new character art and adding deduction gameplay. Later, New One Studio obtained the license to adapt it into the live-action interactive work "Invisible Guardians"; The two works differ in character names and part of the narrative.
The original Hong Kong businessman rescue
In 1942, Hong Kong businessmen faced assassination during a meeting. Fang Bie and Zhang Xiaomeng plotted to kidnap Xue Mei and frame Mao Dai, using the trouble to force the wealthy merchant group to leave. Zhang Xiaomeng's partner later wanted to eliminate Fang Bie, but she shot and injured Fang Bie, killing his partner and saving his life.
The identities of the Liu family and his son were seized
Fang Bie lost the mansion's trust due to the Hong Kong businessmen's actions and turned to Mr. Liu for help, but was knocked out and bound by the father and son. They burned their identity information, hoping Liu Qingshan would become a sea serpent. Fang Bie uses a blade to cut the rope, killing the father and son, and from then on loses contact and identification.
The traitor line's concession and the disguised couple
In the traitor route, Fang Bie gives the Sea Serpent identity to Zhang Xiaomeng and continues to go undercover himself. Lu Mengyin pretended to be a couple with him to cover up intelligence work; Later, Xue Mei also served as the second liaison, participating in covert contacts with Chongqing officials.
The sale of the Sea Serpent line
In the Sea Serpent route, Kang Xing kills Zhang Xiaomeng and reveals Lu Mengyin's mission to Wang Sifan, leading to her being captured by the Japanese. Kang Xing then killed Wang Sifan, pushing Fang Bie down the path of accusing the second candidate; After Fang Bie returned to Yan'an, he was instead thrown into prison.
The identity crisis on the Japanese route
In the Japan route, Fang Bie assassinates Noda and Lu Mengyin, relying on the officer status provided by Okayama to go to Japan. During an interview, Okayama Ai recognized him as Chinese, questioned his identity, and was ultimately killed by him. This route unfolds with the traitor line and the Sea Serpent line, respectively.
Recorded music for PC porting
Tan Ting's 2019 review of the PC port version used "Here We Are Again" and "Piano of the Night (Part 5)" as background music.
