An unfamiliar room
When Jiang Haochen woke up, he was in a dimly lit room, his hands tied behind his back, unable even to get up and turn on the light. A hostile young woman demanded that her family pay a ransom or leave. Detention causes him to lose the freedom and resources he usually depended on, and the story begins with how he understands the situation before him.
A life isolated from each other
Haochen was originally trapped in a wealthy yet monotonous daily life, while the other party struggled to survive. Ongoing contact shakes their original judgments: although money is the apparent purpose of the kidnapping, it cannot explain the full motive. Class differences, circumstances, and personal choices unfold through conversations within a confined space.
Observation and physical strength
The process is divided into storytelling and interactive stages. Players can investigate items in the room to find clues for escape, but actions require consideration of Haochen's stamina; Observing the environment and advancing dialogue work together as a result. The game has multiple endings, so you can't rely on repeatedly clicking every item to make choices.
Distribution and language
The PC version was published by Sekai Project and launched on Steam on June 15, 2018, offering Chinese Simplified, Traditional Chinese, and English. The work was later released on console platforms and added Japanese dubbing; Yurika Kubo and Kana Ichinose participated in the performance. Today's language configuration differs from the content when it first launched on PC.
A performance by two guards
The opening keeps suspense about the names and family relationships of the two girls: the elder is responsible for contacting the family, the younger follows instructions but feels uneasy about the crime. The 2023 Japanese update features Yurika Kubo as the older girl and Kana Ichinose as the younger girl. The Sekai Project annual review clearly identifies the two as sisters.
Added endings and archives
The free update in June 2019 added a new ending. After completing Ending 0 and seeing changes in the main menu, players can replay the ending and select the hidden option. The voice update on November 14, 2023, is based on host porting, allowing users to choose to migrate old save files at the first launch.
Thirteen tracks of original soundtrack
The original soundtrack was released on June 25, 2018, composed by Oli Jan, and includes thirteen tracks. There You Are has a 1 minute 34 second short version and a 5 minute 5 seconds full version, with tracks like Closed, Touched, Broken, Seen, and Hidden included on the album.
The author's explanation of the ending
In a public statement on June 24, 2019, producer and screenwriter Chang Heng mentioned that readers' response to wanting the older girl to survive prompted him to continue considering the story's struggles and create a new ending.
The breakup of a sister's debt-ridden family
The sisters' father left after a failed business venture and incurring huge debts. The mother, under the pressure of continuous debt collection, commits suicide; the sister drops out of school and the younger sister survives by working. Debts and family separation gradually led the sister to become involved in kidnapping.
Haochen's mother and Brother Kun
Haochen became estranged from the family due to his father's busy work and his mother's affair, moving out to live alone. His mother's affair partner, Brother Kun, used his sister to kidnap him. The kidnapping thus implicated Haochen's original family relationships, not just conflicts between guards and detainees.
Trust, entrustment, and the closing of the starting lineup
When his sister was present, Haochen could get to know her further through cigarette topics; His sister might also cover him with clothes. As their conversation progressed, Haochen gradually gained his sister's trust, but he might not be able to persuade her to accept help. In the ending of the 2018 first release, the older sister dies after taking medicine, leaving the younger sister behind; Haochen's survival does not mean saving his sisters at the same time. The new ending added in 2019 is a separate version of the sequel.
Music configuration and scene scale
In a 2018 interview, planner Zhang Heng linked the soundtrack of "Nightlight" to the story's setting: the protagonist is kidnapped and tries to leave the room, the scenes are concentrated, and the overall mood remains gloomy and suspenseful, so a small amount of music can cover the story's needs. The scale of the work is also affected by the development period and art budget during planning; Limited background and character resources are used to deepen the two girls, and the amount of music is arranged accordingly.
