In her 20th anniversary interview, Naoyuki Takeuchi regarded "Tristia of the Blue Sea" as her first complete creation of an original world. He especially enjoyed the conversations between Nanoka and Stuka, and these daily exchanges were part of his review of the work.
Nana's role in the storyline
When talking about the characters, Takeuchi said Nanoka concentrated her own preferences, while Nana could play multiple roles in the storyline. However, he also reflected on relying too much on Nai Nai to drive the story, which might have affected readers' affection for her.
