Painter Luo Ye
Luo Ye lives in an old house facing demolition, where his paintings are hard to gain recognition and he struggles to make ends meet. After being rejected, he noticed a student piece and met Chen Lulan. The two share similar understandings of painting, but there is a distance when it comes to life and each other.
Chen Lulan and the art dealer
Chen Lulan is an art student and the daughter of an art dealer. She has long followed Luo Ye's work, hoping to become his model; Luo Ye later realized that she also influenced how art dealers handled her works. The relationships between characters are connected through painting, and the accident involving a loved one brings a turning point in the situation.
Narrative and performance
The work uses a large number of black-and-white images, dynamic transitions, and inner monologues, with fragments of real life intertwining with the characters' consciousness. Shanghai's street scenes, art exhibitions, and residential environment form a concrete backdrop, with the latter part gradually focusing on Luo Ye's creative and spiritual state.
Closing and painting exhibition
The latter part involves the death of the figure and Luo Ye's experience completing the painting, followed by an exhibition under Luo Yefu's name, turning his personal experiences into public narration. The work juxtaposes the identity of a painter in everyday life with the artist being packaged, and the ending retains a different understanding of this process.
Production
Zhang Zihan and Zhang Xiao signed the script, with Zhang Xiao also involved in programming, key animation, animation, and sound effects; The music credited to Lan Zijun was the artist, with Tao Yikang and Xie Renjie participating in post-production collaboration. The work uses The NVL Maker and is published on Windows.
The signature behind the frame
Luo Ye noticed that students placed their signatures in the corner behind the frame, matching his own signature habit. That painting led him toward Chen Lulan.
Leaving behind paintings and invitations to the Bund
Chen Lulan insisted on keeping Luo Ye's last painting, so her father did not remove it. After meeting at the Bund, she invited Luo Ye to her home next week.
The demolished residence
When Luo Ye returned from the hospital, his original residence had been forcibly demolished, and the painting was buried under rubble. Later, he completed his final painting and ended his life.
