A prophecy seven days later
The rumored Kudan wears Western-style mourning clothes, with a black veil covering his face, and his right wrist is missing. Those who see it will be gradually approached within seven days and eventually hear the prophecy of disaster. Sakuya gradually develops feelings for Toko, a cooking instructor, after meeting the cooking instructor, but Tako's witnessing of strange events turns their daily interactions into a time-limited investigation.
Investigators and those around them
Shuoye is the main force of the Kendo Club, decisive and willing to stand up for injustice; Tako is gentle and thoughtful, but often finds it hard to make decisions because she overthinks. Bunny dresses fashionably and actually conducts field investigations and organizes odd research publications. Sakuya's childhood friend Karen Azuma and Sawako Iwai, who serves Tako, each support them from different perspectives.
Three nine-dan
The title also points to the bizarre, the setting around Kudan, Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo, and the protagonist's surname. Sakuya's repeated childhood nightmares gradually connect with the investigation, and the character's confrontation with the past intertwines with emotional development. Hanekoto was responsible for character design and key animation, Hatsumi Shimizu wrote the screenplay, and KEYTONE produced the music; The theme song "Two Lights" is performed by Yuki Yumeno.
Classmate and Shima family
Sakuya and softball team pitcher Karen Azuma have been friends since elementary school; Koto is a first-year student in the general course and also the president of the Occult Research Society. Tako runs a cooking school in Kudan Minami, and Sawako Iwai takes care of her according to the arrangements left by her grandmother. The campus, clubs, and family relationships of the group form the daily backdrop of the ghost story investigation.
Art and theme song
Character design and original artwork by Yuhaneko, script by Hatsumi Shimizu, music produced by KEYTONE, background work by Suiren Akizuki. The theme song "Two Lights" is performed by Yuki Yumeno, with lyrics by Yukijin and newcomers to Mizuki, and composed and arranged by newcomers to Mizuki.
Communication and confirmation of original sketches
Hanekoto first aligns the design with the character profile and rough draft, increasing saturation while preserving a soft feel. Tazi's mature look and casual attire lead to more rough drafts; Koto quickly confirmed and almost passed on the first try.
Image production from 2018 to 2019
From April 2018 to March 2019, Hanekoto worked in the order of character drawing, packaging, event CG, and promotional illustration. She also handled the background and coloring of the event CGs herself.
Arrangements for the Ghost Tales Project
Hatsumi Shimizu recalled that the collaboration invitation for "Kudan: Urban Legend" coincided with her transition from "FLOWERS" to the winter chapter, and the project team and others completed the series about a year ago. After Shimizu proposed combining ghost stories with yuri, producer Shuichi Koga decided to adopt it.
Script revisions for supporting roles and titles
Shimizu initially organized 'Kudan: Urban Legends' with Sakuya, Tako, and Koto, adding Kawaren to reduce the first half of Sakuya's monologue. She also asks Usagi to use honorifics with her senpai, speak casually to familiar people, and puts the change in how she addresses Ka-Ren from surname to given name after the incident, so the changes in their relationship are reflected in the dialogue.
