A meeting brought by a pair of broken heels
Michelle meets Sam because of a damaged heel. Their lifestyles differ: Michelle lives a life shaped by professional and traditional norms, while Sam values freedom and autonomy in managing his business. As their relationship deepens, Michelle needs to consider how to approach the relationship and whether she should continue to follow her existing expectations in life.
The city setting in 1986
Set in Hong Kong in 1986, the fictional characters' experiences juxtapose with changes in urban pop culture and values. The creative team drew inspiration from Asian films, 1980s animation, City Pop, and Asian literature, shaping the visual style with Hong Kong's fashion, street scenes, and entertainment culture at the time. Identity and personal choices are another thread beyond this love story.
Branching and additional scenes
Dialogue options affect relationship progression. The game has two endings, and points determine whether some additional scenes are unlocked. The gallery displays unlocked scenes and game progress. The official 1.2.2 version instructions list options for English, Cantonese, Traditional Chinese, and Chinese Simplified; Additional content patches supplement scenes, dialogue, and character portrayals but do not change the main storyline.
Production team and music
Oracle and Bone was co-founded in 2018 by Charissa So and Tida Kietsungden, based in Vancouver, Canada. Charissa is responsible for scriptwriting, narrative design, programming, and sound-related work, while Tida is responsible for visual direction, characters, environments, and interfaces. In addition to original music, the game also features works by Timecop1983, Crystal Cola, and Stevia Sphere, blending with 1980s and vaporwave styles to create a sonic expression.
Set and character art
The team consulted old magazines, family photos, testimonies from the people involved, and Hong Kong films, and conducted research visits to Hong Kong. The scenes are stylized, reducing the background crowd to highlight the characters. Michelle's workplace wear features solid-color suits, shoulder pads, and straighter silhouettes, while her casual wear leans toward lighter colors; Sam changes his outfits for different occasions, using curves more often to express a more lively personality.
The soundtrack has a sense of the times
The music features both original and contemporary works by the team, including styles such as electronic, synth-pop, and vaporwave. The production log mentions that Deanie Ip's "Gentle Sigh" and Douceurs Doux's "Let Me Fly Like An Angel" serve as atmospheric references, but clearly state that these two songs are not included in the game.
