Super Cub background with post-production colors
In a 2021 art interview for the anime "Super Cub," Yuki Hatakeyama of Kusanagi explained that backgrounds were still drawn in normal colors, and the grayscale effect was created by lowering colors during the photosynthesis stage. Nobuto Sue said the team accepted this treatment after understanding the relationship between this and the bear's emotional performance.
Repeating the 3D layout of scenes and hand-drawn details
Nobuto Sue said that recurring scenes such as shops, school bicycle parking areas, and classrooms use 3D models to stabilize shapes and provide perspective. The staff room is hand-drawn based on photos; Yuki Hatakeyama made a special effort to keep small items beside the table to avoid altering the spatial impression by reducing them.
The real scene first transitions to line art before reconstructing the space
For actual store and similar scenarios, Nobuto Sue believes that using photo layouts directly would be too limited by the original photo's appearance. The team first drew the art setting line art, then reconstructed the space to closely match the atmosphere the director required.
