Original soundtrack production for "Grim Fandango."
When composing the original 1998 work, Tim Schafer gave McConnell black-and-white concept images of the characters, the Bogart film, and Mexican Son folk music records. He repeatedly listened to records and watched films, and obtained the scores for 'Treasure of the Sierra Madre' and 'Casablanca' from Warner's archives as references.
When composing the original score, the team first used buttons representing game locations to organize recordings of Tim's explanations of scenes, which the composer could click for reference. McConnell hums the melody onto tape and gives it to Tim to audition, then substitutes the scene description with humming or themes; Afterwards, it was organized into a MIDI draft and finally invited musicians to perform.
