Joint score, remote recording, and sample production
When composing the 2019 anime 'Astra Beyond the Lake,' Katsu Yokoyama and Nobuaki Nobusawa discussed the concept of unification and composed the music separately. The two balanced music menus according to the scene, both writing comedy and serious music; Yokoyama chose to focus on seriousness, leaving more comedic expression to the visuals and story.
To capture the orchestral texture of larger spaces, Yokoyama chose to record in Sofia, Bulgaria, using Skype for communication and dedicated software for audio transmission.
The character song "Star of Hope" incorporates the original poem into a musical-style melody. He is familiar with Saori Hayami's singing ability, so he did not lower the difficulty to the usual easy singing level.
When producing Tokyo Scoring Solo Strings, he coordinated musicians and engineers, providing his own quartet and MIDI for the TV drama as performance samples that software sources find difficult to reproduce.
He began studying composition
Yokoyama recalled that after buying a synthesizer in the second year of middle school, he became interested in composing. After graduating from junior high, he studied computer science at a technical college, later turning his attention to film music, and began preparing for a music university at the age of 19.
The soundtrack concept for 'Orpheus of Iron'
When composing the score for Mobile Suit Gunstop: Iron-Blooded Orphans, Yokoyama started from the orphans' idea that it was difficult to own their instruments, using Stomp, which uses buckets, deck brushes, and similar items as instruments.
From studying at university to starting to take orders
Katsu Yokoyama graduated from the Department of Composition at Kunitachi College of Music. During university, he regarded understanding the expressive techniques and background of modern music as an important achievement; He also frequently attended music design classes, engaging with interactive computer music, which connected with what he had learned at the higher vocational college.
From his third year of university, he sent his songs to various places and gradually took on work composing songs for voice actors and advertising music. Under the guidance of a music producer, he experimented with different styles every day and experienced a work style where he would write and record music immediately after meetings.
