From lighthearted projects to war history themes
In a 2012 interview for the novel 'Schwarzesmarken,' Hiroki Uchida recalled that the initial submission was a lighthearted story from the Guard Training School. Koki Yoshimune believed he was better suited to leverage his strengths in writing military history and proposed his existing German story concepts. Uchida subsequently accepted the work.
Monthly outline meetings and handover of manuscripts
In the same interview, Akira Yamazaki and editor Hiki explained the submission process for serialization: Uchida first wrote the outline for each chapter, the three finalized the details at monthly meetings, Uchida wrote the manuscript, and finally handed it to Yamazaki and Hiki for editing. After the characters' moods and supporting character details are filled in centered around Uchida, Yoshimune will be submitted.
A multi-layered structure of serialized and standalone volumes
When writing serialized novels, Uchida wanted each chapter to have a clear introduction, development, and conclusion, while also maintaining the structure of a collected volume and the form of a complete conclusion. Tactics, terrain, and how the army acted were also topics he studied and wrote as he wrote.
Leave the text setting to the artist
After CARNELIAN handled the novel illustrations, Uchida handed the character design text materials to the artist, who then received the corresponding design drawings. This transition between text and image was a step he explicitly recalled in a 2012 novel-making interview.
Fictional namers in the title discussion
Uchida recalled that the team felt that directly using names like the Death Squad was too blunt, and then discussed the names based on the black markings in the casualty classification. Finally, they set Russian officers to name their units, using German names with minor grammatical errors.
Terminology check and tactical board
When original terminology needs to be used in a novel, Uchida first submits a review before deciding whether to adopt it. He also applies his non-electronic simulation hobby to his works, adding battle situation boards; Real-world tactics are rewritten according to the world of "Alternative."
