Accidents and Western-style houses
On a summer evening, the protagonist and Nami end their highland date and return along the mountain path. The car's brakes suddenly failed, and the accident made the vehicle irreparable. Braving rain and thunder to seek help, they cross the forest and discover an old Western-style mansion surrounded by high walls; The call for help quickly shifts into an investigation into the unusual events within the museum.
Reading and selection
The text on screen forms the main narrative, with players choosing how the protagonist responds or acts at key moments. Different choices lead the story to branch off and reach its conclusion. Read content can be reviewed again; the Wii U version of the manual limits the scope to the previous divergence point; Reading back text and undoing a completed plot selection are not the same function.
Bookmark records
At the start, enter the names of up to six characters for the protagonist to create in-game bookmarks. Reading progress is automatically saved, with bookmarks recording names, number of selections, number of endings, and last reading location. You can continue reading again when re-entering, or start over from the beginning of the story.
Direction in sound novel production
Koichi Nakamura recalled in a developer interview that while the team was limited by the number of members, they also wanted those unfamiliar with complex operations to pick up the controller. SFC can play sampled sounds, so glass noises, screams, and other audio elements are used to create tension that makes you hesitant to press the buttons. Early versions mainly featured text, but gradually added background illustrations.
Subsequent and reissuance
"Brother Grass" became the starting point of Chunsoft's sound novel series. The developers stated that players wanted to experience the mystery genre and feedback encouraged the team to contact mystery writers, which later led to the creation of "Night of the Sickle Weawe." In Virtual Console versions like Wii and Wii U, the interrupt or backup functions provided by the platform menu should be distinguished from the game's original bookmarks; The Wii U's full backup restore also restores the in-game save from that time.
